Hyun Joung Lee

Hyun Joung Lee creates rhythmic, organic patterns on handmade Hanji paper, crafted from the inner bark of the Mulberry tree. This traditional Korean paper, with origins over 2,000 years old, is known for its resilience and multifaceted uses. Its meticulous, multi-step production process aligns deeply with Lee’s artistic vision, which embraces patience and care.

Using natural body movements, Lee forms lines that follow the paper's texture in an unplanned, intuitive rhythm. She calls these works “paths,” meant to evoke memories and personal journeys. Each line represents a moment—past or present—that resonates with the viewer’s own experiences. Her paths, often reminiscent of imagined landscapes like forests, dunes, or waterscapes, encourage open interpretation, inviting viewers to explore their inner worlds.
