Betsy Bannan
Betsy Bannan lives in Roanoke, Virginia and teaches painting at Virginia Tech. She has an MFA from Pratt Institute where she met her husband who is also a painter. Bannan’s work is inspired by the center-pivot irrigation circles that span the continental United States as viewed from an airplane or satellite imagery.
Growing up amidst the corn and soybean fields of Ohio, Bannan rode her bike on what she says seemed like endless miles of which, at the time, she had no idea was a rigidly imposed grid system that spread across the mid-section of the county.
“It only hit me after looking at the satellite images of that area much later that I had been living in the very subject matter that, 35 years later, would completely consume my work.”
